Have You Met My Bong...I Mean, Baby?

A 19 year old Florida mother posted this photo on her Facebook page last month. It immediately began to circulate the internet. It landed in my lap via Momlogic Newsletter.

The mom's statement (via Facebook) to the local news: "If u look at the picture u can see that there is no bowl in the TABACCO (sic) pipe. And i took a pic to show one (expletive) person and it was a mistake. I would never ever ever let him get high,"

The Florida Department of Children and Families is investigating, and plan to drug-test both the mother and the baby.

It's Feedback Friday - Give me your Thoughts, Comments, Questions, Impressions on Bong Baby and Mama.

  3. Um, wow. I'm not even sure how to respond to this. I'd love to see what's around the rest of her house for that child to get into.

Being 19 isn't an excuse. My mom was barely 20 when she had my sister and I and my parents would NEVER have put us in that kind of situation. So sad.

  4. If this mom doesn't smoke dugs why would she even have one of these things in her possession?? Dum

  5. Just a plain old stupid decision. I can't for the life of me understand why she would let the baby play with a bong...bowl or no bowl attached. (forget the question of why she has it in the first place)

  6. do they let him play with knives too?! holy sh*t!

  7. Since children like to imitate, that the child is holing the bong that way tells me he has seen it being used. NOT OK.

And using an expletive in your message to the news via Facebook? Yah, that tells us a lot.

    PLEASE take this child away.

  8. Joy - My mother had me at 17. She never gave me drugs.

Some people are just dumb. I really, really hope that baby doesn't test positive for drugs.

  9. Why is the bong in the house, let alone where a baby can teethe on it??? Seriously! If you are old enough to have a baby, please lso have a clue. :)

  10. My first thought is, this mother is irresponsible and just plain stupid. And then I realized- of course she is! She has a bong- to me that is an issue by itself! As shocking as it is to see this baby holding the bong, would we be as outraged to see (him? her? The baby) with a bong in their hand in 18 years? I think an anti-drug campaign should use this.

  11. Holy cow! Did somebody forget to baby proof the house? (And the mom?)

  12. It's drug paraphanalia, it's glass, and her sense of humor is misguided. Now she's scrambling to make excuses for it. Time to grow up now, sweetie, your'e a mom and you have to reorganize your priorities - fast. Anyone of us who has raised kids have a right to pass judgement on this as major dumb.

  13. Speechless--can't think of anything that doesn't involve an (expletive). ;)

  14. Good job Florida DCFS...you stay closely involved with this "mom".

  15. Uh, "tobacco" pipe, really? I mean, REALLY???? Come on, who does she think she's fooling?? Like people really smoke tobacco out of a BONG? What an freaking idiot. I'm sure she instantly regretted the decision to share that stupid photo.

  16. We ARE what we learn from our parents.

  17. It's a totally sad picture yes, and wrong. But really how many people take photos of there kids with beer bottles or liquor bottles? Thosands and I know my parents did it and would never have given me an of it to drink. So before we start judging her we have to think of that. I haven't done the whole liquor bottle thing but do laugh when I see an obviously tired baby fallen asleep at the table with a bottle placed beside him. I can tell that the photo was a joke, a bad one but still.

  18. Joy--I had my first at 19, my mom had me at the same age. I think that I am a very responsible mom to my 4 kids. I would NEVER allow my child anywhere near anything like that---then again, I wouldn't be around anything like that myself. I think age has nothing to do with this. There are drug addicts and stupid people of ALL ages. Unfortunately, for the child, he has to grow up in that environment. Hopefully, Children's Services follows up and stays in contact with the family to ensure that this child does indeed have the safe and secure environment that he deserves!

    Blessings,
    Angie

  19. Another reason I wish there was a "dislike" button on Facebook. :s

  20. A few things:

    1. This isn't to put down the young moms that do a good job, like Angie, who commented on here - but I'm an outspoken critic of "kids having kids" and this is one example of why.

    2. Never post it on the Internet if you don't want it to come back to haunt you - because it can, it may and it will.

    3. Even as a joke, this isn't even funny.

    4. I guess she obviously has drugs in the home.

  21. I wish this world were more simple. As in drug and gang free.
I feel so bad to think of things my kids will have to deal with while growing up that my parents didn't have to, nor me!

  22. People like this make me feel like it's my obligation to have children, because at least I could be sure that my offspring would not have pieces of crap for parents. And sadly enough, that's becoming a rare thing these days. UGH!

  23. That is soooo not funny. I can't beleive what I am looking at! It sadeness me that children are being raised in this type of environmnet. Children only do what they are taught, and obviously this child has learned this action from someone, rather it be his mother or someone else. Wow!

  24. If she isn't smart enough to see why this is a bad idea until after she gets the bad reaction like she did what else is she not smart enough to realize is a bad idea. That is the question and the underlying concern.

  25. Children learn what they live. She more than likely had a parent that didn't think it was a bad idea to have thier stuff laying around either...and so the cycle continues.

Perhaps if DHR does get involved the cycle can be broken. I hope so for the child's sake.

  26. Joy, I had my son when I was 17! I wouldn't even let his grandfather smoke when we were visiting, even if he did it outside! And if he did, I made him change his clothes and shower! I would never, ever, ever let someone live with me & my kid if they owned a pipe or bong.I don't even allow alcohol in the same house as my son.

This girl needs to get fixed. Yes, I mean, no more kids. She was dumb for allowing the baby to chew on that bong, regardless if it's tobacco or pot. They are both just as bad. She deserves to have her child taken away and she needs to spend some time in jail. I know some women who would tear her up for this picture.

  27. I also have seen pictures of little ones posed with bottles of alcohol. They may be in poor taste -- but that's on a whole different level from this photo.

Look at how the child is holding the bong? He's positioned as an adult would be using it. This tells me that he has witnessed adults using this paraphernalia. While many parents may have a drink of alcohol in the presence of their children --- legally -- and (hopefully) responsibly -- there is NO circumstance where the use of this item is ever appropriate with a child.

The parent's age is not relevant to me. My guess is that this woman will be no more fit to parent in her 30s as she is now. She has shown exceptionally poor judgment and seems to be endangering her child.

    Bah.

((BTW -- You do a great job of selecting topics))

  28. Yeah, I've rewritten my comment 4 times. I just don't have words for how utterly disgusted I am by how wrong this is.

  29. This further proves that parenthood is wasted on people who are too immature and selfish to raise a child. A a mother who has lost her only child, and who has since suffered secondary infertility, this absolutely disgusts me. I would give ANYTHING to be a parent to a living child, and this worthless girl is doing these things. It's unacceptable. I foresee a long future of disappointment, problems, and inadequate support for this child as he continues to grow. It's so unfair to see these things... It really makes me ask why she got to keep her child and I lost mine. She needs to have that child taken away immediately.
