Favorite and Least Favorite Christmas Songs - Feedback Friday

My friend, Craig over at The Constant Complainer posed this question last week and complained about the song "The Christmas Shoes". We agreed that song makes us want to hang ourselves. So depressing. I thought this topic was just perfect for my Feedback Friday this week.

My least favorite Christmas song is anything sung by The Chipmunks. You know, Alvin, Simon, THEADORE! Unfortunately, these songs fall on my kids' favorite list. Go figure.

The thing about Christmas songs is that they make me cry when I try to sing along. (I share this strange quirk with Lori from What's After 29?). So, that is usually how I judge my fave. Crying? Check! Love it!

As a child, my favorite song was "Go Tell it on the Mountain" My mom had it on an old Christmas record sung by a Gospel choir,(it was pretty hilarious to see a 7 year old go all gospel, I'm sure). Here is a more mellow version sung here by Sweet Baby James:

My favorite traditional song is "Do You Hear What I Hear". Listen to the Carpenters (LOVE the Carpenters even in this crazy psychedelic video):

My favorite contemporary Christmas song is "Mary Did You Know". I swear this song makes me sob! I listen to the words and can't help but think of my three sons and all their potential. Here it is sung by the great Kenny Rogers:

So, tell me, what is your favorite and least favorite Christmas song???

***there is still time to add your hand made ornament to the linky party below***

  1. I'm guilty of changing the station when The Christmas Shoes song comes on...thought I was the only ninny ;) I love old Christmas music (Bing Crosby, Nat King Cole..anything in that reminds me of Christmas at my Grandma's). Mary did you know makes me cry every time!!! I loath the stupid "I farted on santa's lap" song that plays every once in a while...real nice..especially around my boys! Ugh! (Just another reason on my very long list of why country stations are wrong, so wrong!!!)

  3. I love the traditional Christmas carols that focus on Jesus' birth, the message of the Angel, the meaning behind it all. "Joy to the World", "Hark the Herald Angel sing", "Silent Night" etc.
I loathe, detest, can't abide, (is that stromng enough?) songs that diminish the real celebration... focus on the weather - "jingle bells", "I'm dreaming of a white christmas", santa - "jolly old st Nick", "santa claus is coming"...

I have been hunting for the last three years for a CD with the 'pure' christmas songs without any 'corruptions' and I can't find it - it simply doesn't exist. I have decided I need to compile my own by sourcing the best of each song and making my own CD or playlist on my computer.

  4. i love any of the "oldies" christmas songs. my mom always listened to them when i was a kid...hearing them always brings me back to my childhood.

WORST christmas song EVER is Dan Fogelberg's Same Old Lang Syne...hello, they get a 6 pack and drink it in her car...then she drives away! drink and drive much?!

  6. My personal favorites are Happy Christmas (War is Over)by John Lennon and Wonderful Christmastime by Paul McCartney. Yes, I'm a Beatles lover.

Family Fave: A Charlie Brown Christmas Soundtrack - Even my young boys recognize that these songs mean Santa's coming soon.

Church favorites: Hark the Herald Angels Sing, Joy to the World.

I have a love/hate relationship with Dominick the Donkey, a song I'd never heard until we moved to Chicago. Those crazy Italians! (my hubby included)
    Merry Christmas!

  7. I love all Christmas songs. LOVE THEM. This year every song that is not about a hippo or donkey makes me cry. Not sure if it is homesickness or hormones. Oh Holy Night and I'll be home for Christmas are the ones that usually make me sob the hardest.

  8. I love O Holy Night so much and I also love Mary's Song too. I really do love Christmas music and don't HATE any or it per se, but I don't love Christmas Shoes.

I have a poll-post about favorite Christmas Movies and was thinking about doing a post about favorite songs too.

My kids love I want a hippo...for Christmas and I can't stand that song. I have so many favs-I have one of the Carpenter's Christmas CD's (I think it is called Christmas Portrait) and LOVE it, love Il Divo, Nat King Cole and Harry Connick Jr too: The Christmas Song, Mary did you know--love it too, Dance of the Sugar Plums, I'll Be Home For Christmas, Ave Maria, An Old Fashioned Christmas, Home For The Holidays.

  10. Oh, absolute least favorite is Mariah Carey singing All I Want For Christmas Is You. I have managed to not hear it once this entire season, and I am overjoyed by it. It is THE most annoying Christmas song of all time, and it gets stuck in my head the moment I hear it. I grew up listening to a Bing Crosby Christmas record, so anything with Bing, or Bing singing with the Andrews sisters makes me happy. I particularly love Bing singing White Christmas, O Holy Night and Oh Come All Ye Faithful.

  11. It is a not a very popular song, as in you don't hear it on the radio every five minutes... or at all, but Leann Womack sings this song called His Will Was Done. LOVE it. Everything about it. The message, the way she sings it, the way it makes me feel. Awesome.

  12. I am so happy to see that other people HATE the Christmas shoes song.... I won't even put it in the class of Christmas songs.

My fav has to "O Holy Night" or Handle's "Messiah". Those both really touch me and help me think of the Saviour's birth.

    (Fun post idea, btw!!) :)

  13. Silent Night and O Holy Night are by far my faves. And I too can't stand the Christmas Shoes song, I always turn the radio station when I hear it come on. :/

  14. I posted it on my blog just in case you want to hear it. But definitely be ready to cry.

  15. I love the Old English carols like "The Holly & the Ivy" and "I Saw Three Ships" that remind of Charles Dickens' era of a Victorian England.

"Carol of the Bells" is beautiful.

I also love the very religious carols that give Christmas a magestic feel - like "Angels We Have Heard on High." When sung by a choir during Mass - WOW! Give me goosebumps!

I don't care very much for the kiddie carols like Jingle Bells and the Santa songs. They're cute. I can tolerate them, but they don't do much for me.

  16. I couldn't agree with you more about Christmas Shoes-eck! I too cry at most Christmas songs, even more so as the birthdays pass by.

My favorite Christmas song though is O Holy Night-done right it gives me the chills, and I cry lots too!

  17. Oooo, I hate the Christmas shoes song. I also hate anything sung by The Carpenters on our all Christmas radio station! :) My fave song as a child was "Angels we have heard on high". My favorite classic is "The Christmas Song". I like it best when Michael Buble is singing it!! My favorite newer Christmas song is "Here With Us" by Joy Williams. LOVE it!!

  18. Oh, I forgot the most horrid Christmas song ever...I heard two days ago on the all Christmas radio station: I want a Jonas Brother for Christmas. Seriously. And the poor girl that was singing it is awful!!

  19. I too gauge my favorites by if I get choked up trying to sing them. O Holy Night is by far one of my most favorites. Each year though I have different ones that catch me, this year is The Coventry Carol by Alison Moyet and I Saw Three Ships by Sting. One of my least favorites is Must Be Santa by Mitch Miller, I never heard this until I met my husband and he listened to it when he was growing up. The song just grates on my nerves. The other one I can't stand is one my kids love that is sung by Goofy, I wish I had an elephant for Christmas. Ugh! I don't like the Christmas shoes song either.

  20. The song that I can't *stand* when it comes on is Wonderful Christmas Time by Paul McCartney. My ears bleed every time, it's that bad. I've never heard of the Shoes song, I'm afraid to look it up now ;).

My favorite song is Still, Still, Still. Gives me goosebumps.

  22. I love the song you have up with Kenny & Wynonna!!! I also like the one by Amy Grant about Mary (I forgot what it is called), also any of them sung by Burl Ives. The one I hate to hear is the favorite things song from Sound of Music. That really isn't a Christmas song! Yesh! Love your blog, by the way.

  23. I agree with Bridget - I hate that Paul McCartney song Wonderful Christmastime. Favorite albums are classic Andy Williams and Frank Sinatra, and Burl Ives brings back childhood memories. As for contemporary, of course I like the album by Taylor Swift...
