Did You Know?

Did you know if an injured/diseased skunk winds up in your back yard, continually spraying his foulness all over and driving your dog crazy, NO ONE will come get it? Not even if it's obviously paralyzed and writhing with pain for 6 hours straight.

The game commission will advise you to "wait until it dies then scoop it up with a shovel and dispose of it in your regular garbage can." And the folks you call and offer to pay to come get it (local pest control services) will kindly say "We don't do skunks."

BUT if you make up some story about the skunk having rabies...the same game commission officers will come and shoot it and take it away. Uh huh.

Skunk on da ground, skunk on da ground, what 'cha gonna do with that skunk on the ground?

  2. That is really quite sad! If we lived close by I have a just a "few" guns in this house for hunting and a husband that loves to hunt. He would have helped you out.

  5. isn't it terrible? if you had shot it you could get in trouble and yet they'll do it only after you make up some concern!
I'm surprised they said you could dispose of it in your garbage though...

  6. Oh, that is just awful, all the way around! So sorry to hear that. Glad you found a way for them to come and get it though...you really never know with wild animals what they may have. ugh!

  7. Don't you live in Pitt? Where is all your snow?!?! We Ohioans aren't that lucky!

  8. I hear ya. Our Animal control people are terrible too. In my area we have all kinds of lost dogs stopping by. I don't even try and help anymore because last time I did, I called the number on the collar (SPCA), the system was down, so It shot me to the 911 operator. They registered my information and told me that I had to drive him to the emergency clinic an hour away. When I told them I couldn't do that, they said that I was now responsible for the animal for the night, until they had the staff to pick him up the next day or later. I was NOT going to have a strange dog in my house...and my local cop wouldn't come help me (he had paperwork, ya know...)...so I walked the dog down the road to the local police station, knocked on the door, and handed the poor guy that answered the door the leash.
Corner me in to watching some strange dog all night, will ya...I think not!
For the amount of local tax that we pay now days, one would think out public servants would do their jobs. Ugh.

Sad about the skunk, Jen!! I hope the boys weren't home. I know Ray would have been devastated to see the poor thing...

  9. We have been visited by a very hungry skunk lately...spotted him on our back deck the other night. He was very cute...but not who you want hanging around your house. I make sure not to leave anything he can eat out at night. You would think because of the possibility of rabies, they would want to get him under control...be careful!

  10. Go figure... Makes you wonder, huh? I empathize. Here in Florida, if you find a gator in your yard, they won't come out unless it is at least 3 feet....????????

  11. What a crock! If that ever happens again, email me and I'll give you a nice old farm recipe...works like a charm ;) don't skunks hibernate?...he probably was rabid or something crazy!

  13. AGGGHHHH! When critters attack! Once again, you have me in stitches in the morning. Thanks!

One time while camping when I was a kid, a family of skunks came to visit us right after dinner. I just remember my parents standing the the middle of the tent, holding us tight and telling us to "shush".

Way to think on your toes with the rabies thing. And if you would have someone take care of it with a gun, you wouldn't have visited your back yard for days! :)

  14. if any thing like that happens again, call a pest control company! i live in south texas so i dont know what your laws are like but we do this kind of thing all the time (i own a pest control company)!! since it was injured we would have shot it to put it out of its pain and then removed it! we do this kind of thing even when they arent going to die too. we work with a lot of new home construction companies, when the houses are open skunks and raccoons get in there and make all kinds of trouble! and just so all of you know...there are more pest control companies out there than just orkin and terminex!

  15. Ridiculous the way some agencies work! Likewise...if you call and report that someone is in your backyard, the police will say that they'll send someone over to check it out IF YOU'D LIKE. However, if you say that someone is in your backyard and you will SHOOT them, the police will be there in 2 mins. My father-in-law's own encounter.

  16. What a freaking mess! I hope you didn't have to smell the foulness for six straight hours?! That is awful!

  17. That is horrible.

There should totally be a Skunk Removal Task Force and it should involve Hazmat suits and industrial strength Febreeze!

  18. Lol, nice thinking. You're poor dog, I hope it didn't get sprayed in the face. My friend was just telling me that happened to their dog, and it was just aweful!

  22. It is obviously too late now but if it ever happens again in the future then you should look up a local (or close by) skunk rescue organization for advise. They probably would have come and saved it, There are quite a few out there believe it or not!

  23. A skunk sprayed my dog when my daughter was about 2 months old. I was home alone with an infant, my first baby, and a very stinky dog. The skunk would not leave the yard and I called animal control and they only do dogs and cats! So I had to leave my poor dog out until my husband got home, find an anti-stink recipe online, then de-skunk the dog. What a mess! She stank slightly of skunk for months.

  24. I am seriously laughing at the snunk on the ground song. HAHAHAHA!!!

  25. Jennifer~ that's is surely one STINKY predicament. I won't hesitate for a second to "cry wolf!" Or in this case..."cry rabid skunk!" I guess these are the times I'm okay with living in the city.

    Sweet wishes,

  26. You have to know the lingo with the game commission. That's really gross that the skunk picked your yard to take way too long to die.

  27. oh my gosh! poor you! poor skunk. and a great tip!

  28. Skunks are the WORST! Thanks for the info....hope we never need it!!

  29. That is miserable! It's bad enough when one sprays once somewhere outside your house... it seems to permeate windows, mortar, metal, LEAD, or anything else... I can't imagine it being continuous!

    ReplyDelete
  30. Uh...how are we sure the skunk DIDN'T actually have rabies?? The description of it sounds like it may very well have been a likely cause of its strange behavior. I hope your doggy didn't go near it!

  31. Yuck. BTW, Skunk on the Ground? Deserves a Grammy.
