Pretty Compost?

Spring is around the corner and making your own compost is a great way to use up kitchen scraps and enrich your garden soil. I collect my peels and egg shells in a pretty ceramic cookie jar I keep on my counter top. So, why don't you collect your scraps in a pretty jar - it will remind you to save your scraps and look pretty!

Interested in starting a raised bed garden for the first time this year? Here is my journey to a garden I posted last year:

  1. What a great idea. It looks so lovely! I will have to look for something like this that will fit in with our kitchen. We just remade our garden bed into a raised one. I am very excited about it. Please stop by if you get a chance: http://ontherefrigeratordoor.blogspot.com/2011/04/garden-signs.html

However, I would be the one to get the big surprise when I go to help myself to a cookie.......

  4. Wait - composting? I've never done it. Can you post about composting some time? I'm madly googling right now and am curious if you use your bin in your kitchen to collect scraps and then throw them into a compost pile outside? Do you use worms? Ahghgh - I am a bad citizen of this earth. I can't believe I don't know anything about this and yet I am a freaky recycler.
At any rate, your compost container is pretty on your countertop!

  5. So, making compost is as simple as that? I may have to try that! I am doing my first raised bed garden this year, so I can't wait to read your posts on the subject!

  7. GREAT idea, Jen!! I use an ugly plastic pail...and I'm always trying to hide it. I'm going to see if I can find something pretty now. ;)

  8. I don't have a beautiful cover jar like yours, but i do save my vegetable peelings, banana skins, egg shells, and such for my compost bin. I put it in a vintage aluminum canister that was for storing sugar. I found it in a thrift store.

  9. my dad has a vegetable garden and we keep everything possible for the compost. some fruit and vegetable peels are not very suitable tho, they make the compost too acid. there are quite few articles about what is good for composts, if you are into this, it's worth looking for. anyway, my dad's tomatoes are to die for :)

  10. Pretty jar! I keep mine in an old Tupperware bowl under the kitchen sink. It's amazing what little trash we have with the combination of composting and recycling.
