Weekend Getaway Project - Lovely Fabric Flowers

Okay, here is round two of our weekend projects - Lovely Fabric Flowers. In our experience, this project is best done while watching Mama Mia. And you really should sing along. And dance a little bit...or maybe that's just us.

Supplies:

Synthetic satin/chiffon fabric that will melt
Candle
Sharp scissors
Needle and thread
Seed beads

Begin by cutting several circles from your fabric, these will be your petals. It doesn't have to be perfect, just a general circular shape. In fact, with this project, wonky is good.

The more layers, the fuller your flower! Make each circle a bit smaller than the last - and if you are planning on needing a pair, cut out two of each size at once by folding the fabric in half. This way, your flowers will match.

Hold each circle of fabric over the flame until it begins to melt the very edges. Keep it moving, do it quick! It takes a light touch but once you get the hang of it, it's like riding a bike. Come on Pyro!

See how the melted edges cause the petal to cup? It's cool. It's nestable now!

Do you have some stubborn edges that are hard to reach? Try using a hand held lighter like Joy Beadworks is doing to catch those trouble spots like this:

Now, take your petals and nest them together. You can stick with one color and texture or mix it up! I got wild and crazy by mixing satin in brown and blue and some chiffon in black.

Now, with your needle and thread, sew up through the layers. String three seed beads onto the thread, then back through. You've just attached all your petals and gussied it up a bit.

Okay, now you have some lovely fabric flowers...So what? Well, come on, girl! Use your imagination!

You could make a tiny flower with your scraps and string it on with some beads like this:

Or,you could hit up your Costco $30 jacket, your tee shirt, your Dollar Store clutch, your SHOES! Oh, the possibilities are endless!

Are you feeling all crafty like Girl in the Sticks? Go ahead, raid your friends button box and make a Button Bracelet. It's your weekend, after all.

Okay, get together some eggs, Italian bread, shredded cheese, and one tube of Jimmy Dean sausage and we'll get you ready for your weekend breakfast tomorrow. You know what? Grab some seed beads and wire, too. I'll throw in another quick tutorial from Girl in the Sticks. Don't be late!

  11. Talk about timely!!! With today being Veterans Day/Remembrance Day, I was just lamenting the fact that I didn't order some poppy pins on etsy to wear for the day...this is the exact same technique used to make the pins! So forget ordering them...I'll just stop at the fabric store and get the materials to make my own!!

    I feel so empowered!
