Burning the Koran - Feedback Friday

The Today Show recently covered a story about Rev. Terry Jones from Gainsville, Florida who has declared 9/11 to be National Koran Burning Day. Jones claims that he was told by God to burn the Muslim Holy Book.

It's 9/10 and it's Feedback Friday - Thoughts, Feelings, Comments about the proposed burning of the Koran as a demonstration on 9/11?

  1. This whole thing makes me sad! It also frustrates me as a christian that Terry Jones is doing this in the name of Jesus. We have a God of LOVE not a God of HATE! I don't like all the media cover this man is getting! I think it's exactly what he wants!!

  2. I do not agree with his actions. The God I know would not approve. I am praying that he sees the light, and I continue to pray for everyone that has been touched by the 9/11 tragedy to find peace.

  4. If the media refused to cover this story, it would be a non-issue. He does not deserve attention.

But to you my dear Jenn...have a lovely weekend with your guys!!

  5. I'm with Janet. He's getting the attention he wants.

And I'll add: He's WAY out of line (in my very humble opinion)

  6. It frustrates me to no end that the media lines up and is so quick to spread and show messages of hate while messages of hope, love, generosity and grace barely get mention.

Ugh.... don't get me started on this man and his SMALL group of followers!

  7. I think extremism for any cause can be dangerous.

  8. Oh the things that have been done in the name of God....I don't think his actions are any different than the ones that terrorists do towards us. I think that makes him a terrorist also. I feel he is very arrogant to think that he and his 50 church members speak for a whole nation of people. His actions have already gotten someone killed. I hope that he does not follow through with this idiotic idea.

  9. He is despicable. This is what a Christian "holy man" thinks appropriate? Disgusting.

The media needs to stop focusing on this ignorant man who is an obvious attention seeker.

This is why I have a struggle and often times strong dislike for religion. Many think it gives them permission to act in hate.

I pray for what will happen to Americans and those non-American caught in the crossfire if this happens and footage is broadcast throughout the Muslim world. We need to stop blaming an religion for the acts of a few extremists.

  10. I think this is a devastating blow to Christians all over the world. Do I believe in the Koran? No.
However, burning it is not the way to convert others to seeing God in their lives. If he believes God has asked this of him, that I cannot question. Biblically, God has asked many to do noble and unsettling things in the old and new testament, however... this would affect more than just a little church in Florida. This affects the world.

  11. Does he not see that he is no better than the terrorists? They are both extremists of their religions that are garnering a lot of attention for their cause but damaging the religions they claim to love in the process. It's sad, both for Christians as well as for Muslims. Unfortunately, the more publicity he gets, the greater the backlash will be as well. Hold on......

  12. So sad. So very sad.

A Christian ministry with which I work joined some others in putting an ad in today's New York Times. The message? "Burning the Qu'ran does not illuminate the Bible."

  13. This is extremely frustrating. I could go on and on... I do not agree with this pastor and his plan. This act that he is about to do will affect everyone. I like the question What would Jesus do? Surely not this!

  14. As a german, I grew up with the history lesson that where books burn, people soon will follow.

I also grew up with the image in mind that the USA are a multicultural, open society that treasures different opinions and saves minorities, and thanks to the internet and all those wonderfull ladies out there, this single freak is not able to convince me of the opposite.

    Hugs, Helen

  17. This guy, and his supporters, are loons. But I wouldn't go so far as to call him a terrorist. He's not blowing up buildings or hijacking planes. He's an idiot who is getting too much attention. Arrest him and give him a ticket for not having a permit. Then let's get on with doing something worthwhile to support and celebrate American freedom.

  18. You know what really frustrates me about this, aside from the complete disrespect and intolerance? The fact that it's going to fuel more hatred towards Americans (btw I'm not American) and in return put American soldiers in danger. It's already having that effect so if he actually goes through with it and the media picks it up, extremists in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq will use it to fuel more hatred and in turn cause people to lash out at the soldiers who are there.

If he goes through with it, he should have to go over there and receive the effect of his actions. I'm sure he wouldn't appreciate people burning a Christian Bible in protest for all the evil that has been done in the name of Christianity...

It's too bad one crazy man will have the power to destroy international relations. All he's really doing is serving an anti-American, extremist agenda.

  19. Thank you ladies for making me smile! Yay! I thought there would be more hatred - but there is NONE! Woot!

Oh and he is a terrorist and an ass.

  21. I think it is sad he continues to get all this attention from the media. I heard them say today the press secretary commented he has more cameras on him than he has parishioners.

I agree with an earlier comment about him doing it "in the name of God". We do have a God of Love not Hate and it is awful to hear him say God told him to do it.

  22. I support free speech, but I also support common sense, and this guy seems to have none of that. I understand his frustration and anger with the anniversary America is getting ready to celebrate, but burning books doesn't do anything but inflame more hatred against America. I'd be angry if someone was burning Bibles, so I certainly can't condone a group burning the Koran.

  23. Helen's first sentence gave me goosebumps.

I am against it. Christianity has gotten such a bad name due to people like this doing insane things in the name of God.

I hate that the media is pandering to him. That is what is fueling him.

Though I do not think he is a terrorist I do believe he is dangerous because other weird people will latch on to what he is doing. I mean...who really thought that Timothy McVeigh was a threat just because he was buying a little fertilizer?!?!?

  24. I think the pastor who wants to burn copies of the Quran is not at all an example to Christians. However, my friend had a good thought. I do wonder, if a Muslim leader wanted to burn copies of the Bible, if he would get as much condemnation from the media, president, pentagon, etc., or would they support his right of free speech? Just a thought.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I can not believe that this guy even pondered these thoughts. It's sickening to think someone who is supposed to be Godly show so much hate. Has he never heard do unto others as you would have done to you? The rules don't change because you have a different view on religion.

  26. Just because you have the "right" to do something, does not mean you should do it. And also, just because someone is different than you, does not mean they are your enemy. Neither Jesus or God would EVER tell anyone to burn someone else's religious text. This PASTOR has honestly skipped over the parts of the bible that says to "love your neighbor."

And also, just because another Muslim leader may burn copies of our bible... Does that give our Christian leaders the right to burn theirs? Two "wrongs" do not make a "right."

And in the eyes of politics (kind of), this is not giving our country a good name. This man, who isn't even worthy of being called a pastor, is sending a negative message out to all other countries. He gives us all, Christians and Non-Christians, a bad name. We are now Christians that are full of hate and Americans who are full of disrespect.

This whole country, and even some of the Christian community, needs to learn a little bit about LOVE.

Four paragraphs later, and I am done. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

  27. I think what he is doing is not Christ-like at all and is despicable. However, I do find it interesting that everyone is up in arms about this, but last year when OUR GOVERNMENT burned BIBLES that people sent to soldiers in Iraq so that "the neighboring Muslims wouldn't be offended." Well, no one said anything about that. The story was on CNN-you can check their data base in case you think I am a crazy conspiracy-monger. (I'm not)

  28. as a woman .. from a laicist country.. /turkiye/.. where most of the people are moslim.. but the state is not.. but..where some politicians are trying to change everything.. I must tell that this kind of reactions towards religion are buttering the bread of those politicians .. that is why ı get anxious to hear those news..

But I must tell reading your comments..that I believe stronger than always that woman should lead the world..
    should solve the conflicts..
excuse me but all men politicians and leaders of any groups from all continent are only good to create more conflict ..

Even though some may burn.. make stupid jokes.. about nations.. about religions..somewhere sometime over the world.. this is a always pitiful reaction..

I really am so happy to be a woman.. an knowing you .. intelligent and smart women.. is a great pleasure to me..
