Okay, I'm pulling out Feedback Friday a day early so you can help me dress for a fancy schmancy dinner I have to attend tonight.
I made a mad dash to my favorite stores, Marshall's and TJ Maxx, this week to purchase a dress and ended up bringing home four!
If you have been with me for a few years, you know my Strange Dressing Room Habits. I usually choose a dress by sending photos to my friends and getting feedback. I'm almost always in a hurry and fitting in my shopping between 100 other errands so time is of the essence, so most of the pictures look like this (with my pants and shoes still on!):
I thought it might be fun to get some additional styling advice. So, since I'm not rich or famous enough to hire Rachel Zoe I'm turning to 1,395 of my bloggy friends!
Let's get some background to help you with your decision...
The event is a black tie "food and wine society" dinner at my husband's place of work (so I'm the wife of the "host"). The location is conservative, not a trendy restaurant. The guests in attendance are older and very conservative. Though the men will be required to wear a tux, the women don't usually wear a gown, but rather a cocktail dress. Since it is a Thursday night, I'm following suit. Shall we see the contenders that have passed the walking and sitting test?
(You will notice that since I'm, shall I say, "pectorally challenged" in the bust region, most of these dresses have some sort of ruffle or flower to "boost" my "assets" or lack-there-of.)
#1. Champagne colored satin cocktail dress with neck ruffle. (also pictured above) Comfortable and I can wear my leopard peep toes. TJ Maxx $39.00
#2. Black stretchy knit with layers of ruffles. The most comfortable and I can wear my blue/black snake skin slingbacks. Marshall's $39.00
#3. Multi-colored satin. Busy pattern so I would wear plain black suede peep toes. Fun dress...maybe too fun for this event? Marshall's $29.00
#4. Black and champagne/gold brocade. The most conservative choice. Most comfortable standing, but passed the sitting test. Plain black peep toes. Marshall's $39.00

My girlfriend came over to refill my estrogen reserves last week, and brought with her a fantastic craft for us to do together while chat...

Okay, I'm sitting here with a tummy ache as I write this because I am, apparently, unable to control myself. I ate so many of this new c...
1 or 4. Love, love, love them both! Have fun! Kathleen
ReplyDeleteI vote for #2... but they are all really cute on you!
ReplyDelete#1 for sure!
ReplyDelete#4
ReplyDelete#4
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking 1.
ReplyDelete1 looks best, 4 is a close second. Don´t go for 3, not at all :)
ReplyDeleteNumber 1 is stunning! You look amazing in it and it does brilliant things for your skin tone. x
ReplyDeleteJennifer,
ReplyDeleteYou are so adorable. I am going to say number one for the event. I think you look great in that dress. I like the accent of the shoes to give off a little personality, but for an old foogie conservative event, this definitely suits the bill in my book. It looks awesome on you.
You can't go wrong with any of them but I vote for 2.
ReplyDeleteYou can't go wrong with black for an event. The one after is really pretty. BUT the black can be used over...and over...and over...and, well, you get the picture. :)
ReplyDeletePlus you rocked the black one!
ReplyDeleteOK, shoot, looking back I see I've been outvoted. In defense of the black, did I say you rocked it?
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely number four!! You look stunning in it.
ReplyDeleteI like #1 for the function you described.
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
Janet xox
Most definitely #4! Conservative enough for the event but with some pizazz and also looks great on you.
ReplyDeleteI keep going back to #1. You look great!
ReplyDelete#1, do you have any blinged out shoes? b.c that dress is begging for it!
ReplyDeletewhat fun selections!! but oh, i really love #1... and leopard shoes? LOVE! that is my favorite... just looks timeless & classic... and fun :)
ReplyDeleteI like you in the first one, but it looks to casual to me for a black tie. The black one is best in my opinion and it is very becoming on your frame. Go black!! Black is so safe for the crowd you will be with. ;)
ReplyDeleteHave fun!
I vote 1 or 2. You can't go wrong with either and you can wear fun shoes!
ReplyDelete#4 since it is a black tie event. It is the most sophisticated and appropriate for the event.
ReplyDelete#4 since it is a black tie event. It is the most sophisticated and appropriate for the event.
ReplyDeleteI vote for the black one because it's VERY sexy on you! Quite alluring and I think it's just the ticket for an event like that.
ReplyDeleteOR the black and champage brocade. It's classy and gives you a nice silhouette.
I like #1 and #2, though you look good in all of them.
ReplyDeleteOh, I like #1 the best for the event you described. (but you look great in all of them)
ReplyDelete#1 but really like them all!
ReplyDeleteI like #2. I don't think #1 has enough color and although #3 is fabulous I think it has too much color for this event. And I think #4 looks like upholstery.
ReplyDelete#4 is my vote!
ReplyDelete(but with those choices, you're going to look fabulous no matter which one you go with!)
Judy@cutest-little-things
#1 is the BEST as-is,
ReplyDelete#2 has the worst shape (it's the fluttery sleeves, otherwise it would work)
#3 has a flattering shape, but TOO 80's??
#4 is amazing except for the overwhelming flowers (if you could take most of them off, but leave a bit on one strap and bit of neckline, it would rock!!)(Or if you could take some of the volume out of the flowers by cutting out some of the material, they could probably all stay)
can't wait to see your choice!!
They are all beautiful, but I think #1 or #2 would be the best for this event.
ReplyDelete1 or 4 for sure! I love them both so much I can't decide!
ReplyDeleteI vote one or two. If you go with one, maybe some really nice, big black jewelry or a black rhinestone (understated, but chic) pin or clippie thing to hold your hair back. You look fabulous in all of them. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm voting for #4, it makes you look great and it fits the fancy shmancy role for black tie. If I were there I would supply you with the perfect necklace to wear with it. Have fun!
ReplyDelete# 1 is elegant, sophisticated, great color and fit on you
ReplyDelete#2 The little black dress is always in style, and this one looks great on you - love the sleeves. You'll get a lot of use out of it, since it's so versatile PLUS you mentioned that it was the most comfortable.
# 3 & #4 are fun & flirty...but they don't seem to fit with the description you gave of this event or its attendees.
I say go with elegance and solid colors n- you look smashing in both dresses!
#4 is my favorite. But #1 WITH the jeans is pretty smokin' too! ;)
ReplyDeleteI vote for #1. Very elegant and looks great on you!
ReplyDelete#4 - definitely.
ReplyDeleteGirlfriend, (can I call you that?), are those your JEANS squoosed around your legs?!
ReplyDeleteYou crack me up! Love it!
Okay, The pink# 3 is my least favorite. I ADORE #4 on you. You glow in it. So, if you can pull off the pattern in the conservative crowd you spoke of, I would say Go For It.
Otherwise, 1 or 2 are very nice :)
Have fun!!
My vote is for Number One! I think it looks very classy, but still fun.
ReplyDelete#1 and #4 are BOTH keepers!!!
ReplyDelete#2 with #1 being a very close second.
ReplyDelete#4!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI think #2, when in doubt go with the black. You can't go wrong with black. Add an amazing necklace and you've got a classy look. #1 would be great, too.
ReplyDeleteMy vote is #1 or #4. They're both awesome finds! #3 screams spring to me and #2 looks a little casual. Good luck with your choice!
ReplyDelete#1 is my vote.
ReplyDelete#3 doesn't match the description of the event at all.
#4- when i saw this one I gaped a little thinking it didn't match the event and wasn't conservative, so I had to giggle when I saw what you wrote about it. Funny how we all have different ideas.
I say #1, my 10 yr old says #3 (☺) Have a great night! Let us know what you choose!
ReplyDeleteAlrighty... hubby just came in and put in his 2 cents ~ his vote it for #3 or #4. Maybe my son will come in and pick #2 then we will really be of help :)
ReplyDeleteI don't know how you are going to pick.... I'd go with #4, I love the pattern and classic lines.
ReplyDeleteThe first time I comment is about an outfit!!! #1 is SO classy and elegant. And the animal print heel gives it just enough personality. Perfect!
ReplyDelete#2. totally makes you look hot!!
ReplyDeleteThe beige dress makes you look thinner because of it's length.
ReplyDeleteMy favorite is number 1! So cute! All the dresses look great but definitely love the first one! (Especially the jeans ;)
ReplyDeleteMy favorites are #1 and #2 - both would be great choices.
ReplyDeleteThey're all great, but I think #4 is my fav!
ReplyDeleteThe solid black is a hand-down winner in my opinion, but I know I'm a little late for my vote to count. Which one did you go with?
ReplyDelete1 or 4 ! Which did you choose??
ReplyDeleteGeez Louise.....I looooooove 1, 2 AND 4.....just keep all 3....Happy Birthday to you!
ReplyDeleteSo which did you choose? You look HAWT in all of them. Those oldsters probably needed their oxygen tanks.
ReplyDeleteNot that it matters at this point, but I like #1 and #4 the best.
PS...Saw the Big Guy's quote in the paper the other week. :)
