Cutting Weight

(My 11 year old wrestling this week)

So, I'm a wrestling mom.  I love it. I really, really love it.  A lot.

My 10 year old has an opportunity to wrestle for a state qualifier, for our region, next month at 65 pounds. He weighs 66.0.

It's Feedback Friday...

Would you let / help your 10 year old wrestler cut a pound for a tournament?

(Mommy bragging moment) Here is his 41 second pin during the championship bout of his last tournament:

  1. Since it's only a pound and a great opportunity, I would as long as my child wanted to and it wasn't me pressuring them to do it.

  2. I trust that you're not going to starve him and make him run around in a rubber suit. If your house is anything like mine, eating healthier and avoiding snacks should do the trick. However, it may be a little like paddling up stream. My 12 year old just grew 1 1/2 inches in 6 weeks and that had nothing to do w/ the amount of junk he eats. Good luck and keep us posted!

    1. We sat down and I said, Let's be straight with each other about this...we both know you sneak candy almost every day. He sheepishly agreed so that would be his main method of cutting back. Candy!

  3. My husband wrestled in high school, and my kindergartener just went to his first wrestling practice this week. (He's just doing practices this year for fun...no tournaments.) Personally I hate the idea of growing boys cutting weight. I wish they'd just weigh them at the start of the season and then just go with it, so boys wouldn't feel pressure to cut weight. That being said...if it were my boy who only needed to drop a pound to wrestle at state, I can't say that I wouldn't let him.

  5. First off, What a great picture! And now, the weight thing... 1 lb ~ not such a big deal ~ that's like going to the bathroom :) I think the goal for you at this point is to teach him the "right" way to lose the weight ~ starting with cutting the junk (like you mentioned above) and "healthy exercise" that way he won't be having to wear plastic suits to school and starve himself or use laxitives (etc.) to help things along.

  7. I don't usually post comments but this subject has caught my attention. I think that you are doing a wonderful job by being rational and talking to your child. I know there were many on the high school team that would wear rubber suits and suck on hot balls and spit in a cup to cut weight(5 to 10 pounds). That is were I find it insane to do that for a sport. I do believe that one pound is not a big deal..cutting the candy is a great way.

  8. If he can cut it naturally by eating right and working out yes by all means do it since it's the end of the season.

I am a wrestling mom and I love it too my son had to make hard choice this year and move up a weight class because he was two pounds over the limit he decided that this was the better choice than trying to constantly watch his weight this happened mid season. He had an amazing season because of his choice and became a stronger better wrestler.

  9. Good day! Do you know if they make any plugins to protect against hackers?

I'm kinda paranoid about losing everything I've worked hard on.
    Any suggestions?
