Natural Decor

I've written before about "shopping the yard" for new decor ideas. I love to use twigs and leaves,

I love bird's nests and stray feathers in jars,

Pine cones and branches

monkey balls piled in trays...you get the gist.

Well, I contest that you can fit anything you love into your decor. Is that a challenge?!? Yes, and to prove my point I give you one of my favorite decor items: Bee's Nest!

I've had an idea to decorate with a bee's nest for awhile, and it took me nearly a year to find one. But once I had it, I knew just what to do with it.

A little gold glaze, some fishing line for an invisible hanger, and a thumb tack and I was good to go!

Do you ever shop the yard for decor ideas?

  3. Love the bees nest...we had a HUGE one appear in our Tall Bearded Iris bed and everyday we had to be very careful when near it (lots of activity!) One morning I went out to the garden and it was shredded beyond belief and all the plants around it looked like something big had rolled all around. We figured it was a black bear and found it funny to think that somewhere in Virginia was a black bear with a Very swollen nose!
PS..remember..tomm is Pieday! Come bake with me ;-)
PPS..so those things are called Monkey Balls..I always wondered

  4. Wow ~ who would have thought? I love it. Any bee stings or misadventures in retrieving that thing? :)

  5. Great ideas! Although you win the bravery award for bringing a bees nest into your home!! Looks great though.

BTW...did you spray the birds nest with anything to kill any possible critters?

Obviously I have issues from my recent buggy adventures.... see post. :)

  6. Okay, there is actually a long story to the retrieval of the nest :) I found it in the late fall in our community park on a low branch and got out to cut it down and the cops stopped and were watching me! So, I had to pretend I was just walking around until the po-po left.

Then, went through a series of heart stopping tests to be sure it was empty. I drove home with it in a bag and my hand out the window the whole way home :)

I stuck it in the freezer overnight to be sure they were dead and then decorated it. Done!

  7. How cool is that! It really goes with your decor too. There is really nothing exciting in my yard (or neighborhood). Although we get some gorgeous fall leaves.

  8. Okay, I would be waaaaaay too scared to bring a real bees nest into my home. And your story about the "po-po" TOTALLY made me laugh.

  11. Some of my favorite things are the found feathers that are on my kitchen table...surrounding my terrarium.

  12. Very cool. It seems whenever I try something from nature it always looks wrong, but that could just be from my complete inability to accessorize :).

  15. Jennifer, my mother has had a wasp nest hanging in some room of her home (she's moved several times) for more than 25 years! She loves it and has taken such good care of it. So, expect your to last for a while if you preserved it like she did!

  16. I can't believe someone else has one of those hives in their house! My father loved the outdoors and frequently brought back "treasures", including a hive very much like yours. He passed away 5 years ago, but my mom still has the hive up in the sunroom.

  17. I love shopping in yards... one of my favorite finds were two really nifty branches with great twists and personality and bark... With a little work, they became perfect curtain rods. I also love using tiny pine cones as "tassels" on things...

    (going back to lurk mode...)
