I usually post a recipe for some sort of high calorie treat here on Wednesdays, and I do love to bake, but I also know that I struggle with some of the same issues most women do in regard to food. It's a balancing game all day long between exercise and portion control to "earn" the treats.
So, it's a simple thing, but I wanted to show you how I make my lunchtime salad dressing stretch so I can have my dessert tonight!
Most dressings weigh in around 10-14 grams of fat per 2 tablespoons, and to be honest, it's really hard to stretch that 2 tablespoons! Let me show you how you could even get away with 1 tablespoon of dressing for your salad.
Make your salad in a plastic lidded container that is larger than the portion of salad. Squirt your portion of dressing right on top.
Place the lid on top and SHAKE SHAKE SHAKE! (Note: it's very difficult to photograph the process of shaking!)
Place your salad onto a nice plate and sit down to a civilized meal while cursing those darn Real Housewives of NYC.
This salad fills a dinner plate and I actually used 1 tablespoon of dressing, saving me 7 grams of fat (that I can eat in cookies later, shhh!).

Okay, I'm sitting here with a tummy ache as I write this because I am, apparently, unable to control myself. I ate so many of this new c...
Eat your salad naked and have TWO cookies later......just saying!
ReplyDeleteThat looks so good! I've been craving a sald from Ruby Tuesday or Whole Foods....Seeing the one you made makes me think about going to grab one today for lunch:) Have a great Wed!

Looks yummy! I always thought that we should eat naked because then I think we would be a skinny America verses a fat one. God knows if I saw some hairy naked guy sitting next to me at dinner I'd never eat again and then yea I'd be the skinniest gal around, lol! You wouldn't even care about dessert at that point!
ReplyDeleteHey what have you done about your son's teacher? Just really thinking about you and the situation!
You're so smart!
ReplyDeleteGreat tip. My secret? I usually eat my salad with rice vinegar = 0 calories or balsamic vinegar = 5 calories per tablespoon and I never use 1 tablespoon. Mmmm my favorite salad? I know you are wondering... romaine, chicken, cucumbers, tomatoes, small sprinkle of feta, a few sliced up kalamata olives and bit of balsamic vinegar. YUMMY!
ReplyDeleteI feel really dumb for not thinking of doing that.
ReplyDeleteAhhhh! I'm so glad to find another salad shaker! People always think I'm a nut when they see me shaking my salad at work :) I do it in a big ziplock sometimes too. Great job spreading the word!
ReplyDeleteI do that exact same thing and it works perfectly!
ReplyDeleteYum, I am hungry for lunch.
ReplyDeleteHi there, I just found you from 1 Funky Woman, whom I found from: My Life is a Piece of Cake. I too have three boys—they’re ages 13, 12 and 9. I am really going to enjoy reading your blog.
You rec’d a lot of great comments on the teacher story. Keep being your sons’ advocates in the classroom. I personally have not had blood boiling issues with any teachers in elem school…but just wait until middle school.
Anyway, my Hubs is a 5th grade teacher and I can’t wait to tell him tonight about this. Is she cleaning up the mess from the shaving cream? I’d have a hard time letting go of this. Children should not even be talking during test taking, let alone playing. What the heck are they spraying it on? OK, I guess I need to move on…. I am hoping that other parents speak up because they need to.
Good for your son expressing his feelings to you.
This is a great tip, Jennifer. I tend to think that I've "earned" the junk just b/c I deal with screaming little kids all day, but that's not so. ;) I bet I would save so many calories if I started making some salads this way. :)
ReplyDeletehaha! this is the best way to spread the dressing! my friends at work think i'm silly, but i shake my salad everyday!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea. We're having salad for dinner tonight so I'll be shaking it :)
ReplyDeleteI'm all for redirecting calories toward cookies! You are clever!
ReplyDeleteI make homemade dressings for our salads a lot and we ALWAYS have too much because we want every. single. lettuce. leaf. covered. This is a great idea to cut down on unnecessary calories!
ReplyDeleteSalad looks great. Too bad I'm the one who eats 20 cookies afterwards. Great metabolism, but it's going to catch up with me one day.
ReplyDeleteSorry for being MIA last week. Was in Vegas, baby! Am back! Tired, but back and trying to play catch-up now. Talk soon.
Great tip....I'm a less is more dressing girl. I like to taste my garden goodies not drown them. I hate it when you order a somewhat healthy salad at a restaurant and its slathered in dressing. Your tip reminds me of those McD's salad shakers from a few years back. ;)
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!!! I'm all about making deals with myself to get treats :)
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea. I love to have my "treat" mid afternoon with my coffee and I always feel guilty when I do not get my workout in.
