A New Olympic Sport? Feedback Friday

Nell Ann, from Domestic Indecision, contacted me last week with the following story about a proposed Olympic sport for London 2012...Pole Dancing!

Yep, it seems that the pole dancers of the world want their shot at the gold and are looking to Vertical Dance, a pole dancing school, to make it a reality. The company contends that pole dancing has come out of the strip club and is an accepted form of exercise at this point and they plan to lobby for it's inclusion at the 2012 Olympics. They compare their sport to skateboarding, once shunned and now widely accepted.

Question: Does the history of pole dancing affect the way you will always view it? Would you want your teen daughter to take a pole dancing class at, say, the YMCA? Will it ever separate itself from it's raunchy strip club beginnings?

Thoughts? Let's hear some Feedback this Friday...

  2. It is amazing to me what is being considered sports in the Olympics. For one, curling. Ummmm, no. I will watch REAL sports like skiing, skating, etc.

  3. I think they would have a hard time separately the dancing from the sexual-ness (is that a word) of the dancing. I can't imagine watching it and not feeling uncomfortable.

  4. This is a joke.....right?? Can't wait to see the costumes for that sport ;-)

  5. Brrrrrr! Pole dancing and winter olympics, never really put those together!....but maybe they can use some of the figure skaters' costumes ;)
instead of a victory lap, would they do a victory spin?!? I find this hilarious but very unlikely!

  6. I'm ok with somebody taking pole dancing lessons where~ever they want......but I really do not think we need to glorify it and make it a "sport"!!!!! And the Olympics......what are they thinking!?!?!?!?
Just a little weird to me!!!!! :)

  7. Come on, who are these people that think everything gets a shot at being a sport! Next we will see ladder racing or ZORB racing at the Olympics! Zorb is really a true sport in New Zealand (rolling down a hill in a large inflatable globe)

Now that I cannot imagine only because I would be truly dizzy and then throw up so not only would I be flying around in this globe but so would my puke!

Pole dancing is a lot of pelvic thrusts and hair swooshing so how can you look at it as anything but sexual. But I'm sure it would get the highest ratings and most watched in the Olympics!

  8. I think there are other types of dance that are more athletic and require more ability that could be made into an Olympic sport before "vertical" dancing.

  9. Hi Jennifer, so glad I found you last night while doing my nightly blog reading. Just wanted to let you know that I've added pics of the prizes, more chances to win, and an extended time frame...in case you are interested.

  10. Nice. Just nice. Well, I think that it would be strange to watch for sure. They'd have to feature it after the 10 pm slot to abide by the TV ratings rules I suppose. :) I can hear it now..."This Olympic sport is rated "M" for mature audiences."

I have been asked by gal pals to take the classes for this "sport" in our area and have declined. Maybe you saw the Marriage Ref this past Sunday? The host says, "Who wants to see a resentful, sulking pole dancer? That's not good for anyone." That would be me.

  11. other forms of classic dance - ballet, tap, jazz, ballroom, etc. need to be added to the olympics WAY before pole dancing gets considered.

  12. I have one question: Is this a summer or winter sport?

  13. IMHO, that's just silly. I thought it was bad enough that we have a "ribbon twirling" category in gymnastics. Vertical dancing? That's just, crazy talk.

(No, I don't think it could ever be disassociated from its origins. I could see the "sport" happening though. I was amazed at how the moves of college and professional football cheerleaders have moved into the repertoires of elementary school football teams. Ten year olds doing hip thrusts. Eyeroll. Yeah, I could see pole dancing happening. But, I wouldn't be happy about it.)

  14. Er, I left out the word cheerleaders. Elementary school football cheerleaders. lol.

  15. In reference to you Cherry pie question...don't think the fact that they were frozen was the problem unless it was not a good batch. I used part frozen(the dark red cherries) and part water packed can(the lighter tart cherries). Give it another try! By the way...it was fabulous (she wipes sweet cherry juice with her sleeve)!

  16. Can't get away from the stripperness of it...although I wouldn't mind a pole dancin' bod!

  17. Will always be a strip club thing to me. My question? If they let pole dancing in as a "sport" then do they need have hip hop competitions, jazzercise? yoga? how 'bout an elliptical competition? If the pole dancers out there need a venue to "compete" set something up at your local strip club...I'm sure there will be lots of men (and women too) that will come to view your competition....and I'm pretty sure there are already "cash prizes" :)

  18. Hmmmmm... very interesting! I think, sadly, it will always have a negative connotation associated with it, but it takes some serious talent, strength and skills to do that pole dancing. I mean, if the dancer isn't wearing a g-string and hooker heels, it would look a LOT different, right? I imagine it could look really graceful like those aerial dancers do.

  19. I think I could accept this as an Olympic sport. I have taken a Pole Dancing class for exercise and it is rough! I think it would be a lot less raunchy if the "athletes" wore more than tassels and platform heels. Maybe with some fun upbeat music like they do with gymnastics routines?!

  20. us pole dance federation championship is taking place on fri 3/19 in nyc and you should check out their website to see the requirements for the routines- just like ice skating! it will definitely take some time, but it's always a possibility. it take a great amount of skill to perform those tricks!

  21. Hmm, Winter olympics and pole dancing... Just be careful not to get your tongue stuck to the pole.
I'm with the majority ~ wouldn't be able to get sex off the mind. Yikes!

  22. Found your blog through j-a-girl. I love your recipes! Cooking and baking are two of my favorite hobbies so I can assure I'll be back to try some of these out!

But about your post. I cannot wrap my mind around that concept.... I laughed out loud when I read it.

    Whose idea was that anyway??

  23. Olympic sport? Seriously? No way.
Sorry, but skateboarding never turned anybody on, that I know of. I agree that it can be considered a form of exercise, but that doesn't make it any less sensual. Who would the judges be? Guys that go to strip clubs regularly?
No, no, nope. I don't like it. And I don't think anyone would take them seriously anyway.
Great topic, btw. Good to know what's going on out there. ;)

  24. I just had a thought. If it were for the winter olympics maybe they could require them to wear 2 sweaters, snowboarding pants and a parka. Then maybe I'd consider it. Haha.

  25. These comments have been so fun to read! Thanks for giving me a shout out on your blog, too. Gotta love FF. : )

  26. Is pole dancing a good, cardio workout? Yes
    Is it exercise? Yes
    Is it a sport? No

    Come on. Be real people.

No, I would not like it if my daughter decided to compete in this as a "sport."

  27. As much as I wanted to just joke around and make some sort of piggish comment about poles, strippers and the Olympics, I'm not going to. The truth is that I've read over and over how pole dancing is truly seen as legitimate exercise by many.
