Santa Stories

At a cookie exchange this week, one of my friends began to shush anyone discussing presents of any kind because her preschooler was in the next room and, in her home, Santa brings all gifts.  I asked her "You don't get your kids anything from you?!?"  and she said she didn't and then the conversation switched to each of our family's traditions regarding the Big Guy in Red...

I guess I was always too selfish to give Santa all the credit for everything on Christmas, so I limited him to 2 gifts (I blogged about this a few years ago here: Santa's Sack - this title received many many gross inappropriate "sack" comments, I should have known...)

Anyway, it's Feedback Friday and almost Christmas, so....

How does Santa do his thing in your house?

  1. WOW! You are way more organized than us. Our Santa does things different every year. Usually he brings the big presents not wrapped and stockings. I've never done anything special with wrapping, but this year each kid got to pick a roll of paper, so their presents are easy to spot. My friend did me one better. She wrapped each kid's presents in a different paper, but didn't label them. Christmas morning she'll put a swatch of paper in their stocking so they'll know which ones are theirs.

    1. A lot of my friends told me Santa doesn't wrap gifts - that is a great idea!

  2. We do not do Santa in our house. I have moral oppositions for several reasons. Most other parents think we're killing our children's childhood but I can guarantee we are not. This reminds me that I should repost my blog post about it but we are without a computer right now!

    1. I have a neighbor who feels the same way about Santa - ironically, her kids were the first ones to run out the street when Santa drove thru the neighborhood on a fire truck last week! She looked a little upset but allowed them to get a picture with him.

Good luck with your computer- that stinks!

  3. Santa does stockings and one gift here. It's usually the "big" gift, but my daughter asked for an ipod this year, and we don't want Santa to get the credit for that one, lol. Santa gifts are wrapped in Santa paper, and that paper is hidden in the garage so the kids never see it just laying around.

My kids also have their gifts wrapped in their own paper. This year is puppies in Santa hats for my daughter, and Frosty the Snowman paper for my son.

    I ♥♥♥ Christmas!!

  4. Yes, we do Santa...although my daughter found out the truth this year, we will still do Santa. Here is where I wrote about how she found out: http://cindis.blogspot.com/2012/11/the-truth-is-out.html

The three of us (Mom, Dad & Daughter) do our gifts Christmas Eve night after dinner. Santa delivers his during the night wrapped in "Santa" paper...no other gifts are ever wrapped in Santa paper at our house.

I try to even out what she receives from us and from Santa. Anything that requires putting together or time, she gets from us because there isn't much time on Christmas morning to play with the gifts since we are on the road immediately after gift opening...which kind of sucks but we have to go to both families and it requires 3 hours of driving.

Although, I am kind of sad that she knows the truth about Santa, I am happy that I now get the credit for all the gifts. I am glad I am not the only one that felt that way!

Truth or not, Santa will always visit our home and we will always leave milk and cookies out for him and carrots for his reindeer . . . until she's out on her own. It's part of the magic of our Christmas.

    1. This is my first year for no Santa belief here - our 9 year old sat us down this summer and broke it to us he didn't believe anymore. My husband refuses to believe he doesn't believe! We will still do the traditional Santa gifts though, i can't help it!

  5. Our kids all know that Santa is really Mom and Dad...even the three year-old. So "Santa" brings their stocking, but they know that's really Mom and Dad and Mom and Dad bring all the "real" presents.

    1. I'll bet they love carrying on the game of Santa even though they already know :)

  6. All of the kids gifts are from Santa...the kids are only little for such a short amount of time, so I want them to really believe and feel like it's all magic...plus, I don't need a "Thank you" from them, because it's all over their faces: that's the best present I could ask for...

    1. You sound much more mature than I :)

I can't help it, I want all the good stuff to come from me. That dang Santa didn't wipe one single runny nose or clean up puke all year - no way I want them liking him more than me!

Christmas really is magic, isn't it? I, too, used to love that look of wonder...sigh...it sucks when they grow up!

    2. Oh, I forgot to tell you - in my husband's family growing up, Santa even brought the Christmas tree on Christmas Eve! Can you imagine how that would blow your mind to come downstairs to see a whole tree with gifts that weren't there the night before?!

    3. That would completely blow my mind! But I'm already scrunched for time as it is, so I can't imagine his parents doing all that work on top of presents (they probably weren't the kind to wait last minute for wrapping though!)! Plus, I like to enjoy the Christmas tree throughout the season...

  7. My "kids" are 22, 21, 17, and 14. We have done Santa since they were very little and my oldest believed he was a real person for well into middle school...Santa never wrapped gifts and left you something you asked for along with a stocking full of treats. We don't regret any of that for one moment. My kids had magic and love at every Christmas. Never begged or whined for things, and were very well-behaved for the month of December! They knew they were loved and they all know the real meaning of Christmas. (: This year, Santa is leaving a stocking of goodies, but all of the gifts come from parents and family...

  9. I liked Santa and tried the whole thing when my eldest was really, really little. However, I also always wanted my kids to know the joy of giving, and after my Eva made a gift for her Dad, and gifts for her grandparents, and I took her shopping to help me pick a gift for her babysister, she looked at me and asked - "Mom, if we make all these gifts, why do the gifts for me come from Santa?"
I found that so smart and logical that I filled her in - that was short before her 3rd birthday - and we´ve never done that Santa thing after. We give each other, we think about picking nice presents, and that´s all the magic we need.
