Apple "Rose" Pastry

You have all probably seen the cool Apple Tarts that are taking Pinterest by storm.  I actually saw it on on The Today Show and was instantly interested!  It's a "statement dessert" and I love to walk into a party with something like it.

The original recipe I saw was a healthy version sweetened with apricot preserves...and healthy has it's place, but if I'm going to splurge it's going to be with butter and sugar.  So, I reworked it to make a beautiful and delicious dessert. It has a shortcut in the frozen puff pastry.  Puff pastry is a pain to make so I'm happy to use it!

Ingredients:

1 box of frozen puff pastry
3-4 apples, I used Granny Smith but a sweeter apple can be used. The red skin on a different apple would have made the "rose" more
3 TBSP soft butter
1/4 cup sugar
1/2 TBSP cinnamon
Honey

Directions:

Unfold each layer of frozen dough.  Cut at the crease of the fold for a rectangle of dough then cut each rectangle in half length-wise to create a strip.  Roll the strip of dough on a floured surface to make a 12" x 3" strip.

Mix together the butter, sugar and cinnamon for the filling and spread over the rolled dough:

Cut apples in half and cut out the core and slice thinly as shown below.  Leaving the skin on gives the finished dessert more color.  Place slices in a bowl and microwave for 3 minutes.

Layer the apples over the pastry as shown below:

Fold the bottom of the dough in half over the apples:

Begin at one end and roll the apples and pastry:

Place into a greased muffin pan:

Bake 375 degrees for about 40 minutes (I laid a piece of foil on top after 30 minutes since the apples started to get overly brown).

After about 10 minutes remove from pan and drizzle with honey for a gooey topping! Right before serving a dusting of powdered sugar makes a nice presentation:
